Cub Scouts is a section of Scouts Canada programs for boys and girls from 8 to 10 years old.

Contents

Cub Scout Promise

I promise to do my best,
To love and serve God,
To do my duty to the Queen;
To keep the law of the Cub Scout Pack;
And to do a good turn for somebody every day.

Cub Scout Law

The Cub respects the old wolf,
The Cub respects him/herself.

Cub Scout Motto

Do Your Best

Organization

The youth meet in a group called a Pack, which is further broken down into Sixes (usually containing six Cubs). Each six has youth leaders called a Sixer and a Second.

In addition, a pack may send a Keeo down to the Colony and a Kim may come down from the Troop.

Program

The Cub Scout program is divided into six activity areas. Each activity area provides various learning opportunities -- Cub Scouts can develop/modify their attitudes while gaining skills and knowledge in that particular activity area.[1]

The six activity areas are:

Activity Area Star Award
The Natural World Black-star.gif Black Star CanadianWildernessAward.png Canadian Wilderness Award
The Outdoors Green-star.gif Green Star CanadianCamperAward.png Canadian Camper Award
Creative Expression Tawny-star.gif Tawny Star CanadianArtsAward.png Canadian Arts Award
Health and Fitness Red-star.gif Red Star CanadianHealthyLivingAward.png Canadian Healthy Living Award
Home and Community Blue-star.gif Blue Star CanadianFamilyCareAward.png Canadian Family Care Award
Canada and the World Purple-star.gif Purple Star WorldCitizenAward.png World Citizen Award

Within each area, Cub growth and development is recognized by a star (which provides broad introductory skills and knowledge), a number of Cub badges (which offer increased knowledge and skills focused on a specific aspect of the activity area) and Cub awards (which recognizes broad and increased knowledge and skills relating to the activity area).

There are also Cub Speciality Badges, which recognize specialties for each Cub Scout and Cub Scout Pack.

Achievement over time in all six activity areas results in a well-rounded young citizen with knowledge and skills in:

  • the outdoors
  • cultural pursuits
  • personal fitness
  • moral and ethical development
  • responding and contributing to her/his local and world community.

With the Cub motto of "Do Your Best" front and centre, Cubs in each "Cub Pack" are encouraged to try new and more challenging activities.

As Scouters leading the Cub Pack, it is important to plan meetings that fit the overall program.

Formerly Known As...

Cub Scouts was formerly known as "Cubs", and before that "Wolf Cubs". Cub Scouts was renamed in 2010 to reflect that it is a section within Scouts Canada. The suffix "Scouts" was also added to the sections Beaver Scouts, Venturer Scouts, and Rover Scouts.
