Personal Interest Award

To qualify for the Personal Interest Award, you must complete the following requirements to the satisfaction of your company and advisor.

  1. Working with someone knowledgeable in your personal interest area, set your own list of challenging, acceptable requirements.
  2. Work on your personal interest project for a period lasting not less than twelve months.
  3. Show that you have made genuine effort and progress.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in the interest area.

Examples of Interests

  1. Canoe Building
    1. Be familiar with the type of tools and materials used for making a fibreglass or canvas covered canoe.
    2. Know the names and functions of all canoe parts.
    3. Be able to undertake general maintenance.
    4. Be able to undertake minor repairs.
    5. Be familiar with canoe accessories.
    6. Be able to sharpen and maintain essential tools, and to select suitable materials for use.
    7. Be familiar with more than one type of canoe construction.
    8. Play a major part in the building, or major repair of, a canoe.
    9. Make a presentation to your company about work done (including hours spent) on each part of the job.
  2. Computer Science
    1. Describe four input, output, or input/output devices and explain how they work.
    2. Describe the following terms: ASCII, bit, bus, byte, chip, BASIC, COBOL, CP/M, DOS, FORTRAN, kilobyte, mainframe, megabyte, Pascal, peripheral, RAM, ROM.
    3. Describe the difference between analogue and digital computers. Explain the uses of each.
    4. Give four examples of uses for computers.
    5. Write a program in BASIC (or another computer language) of at least 200 lines, incorporating arrays and gosub. Provide data to test the program. Input the program, run and debug it.
    6. Briefly describe a computer language other than BASIC.
    7. Visit a computer installation in your area and give a report to your company on (i) the way the computer is being used, (ii) how the computer may affect jobs, and (iii) what future plans that place has for computers.
    8. Identify four jobs in the computer field, and describe the necessary training for these jobs and opportunities for them in the area where you live.
  3. Palaeontology
    This scientific field deals with life forms found on earth long ago.
    1. Know the different types of fossils found in Canada, and be able to place them on the geographical time scale.
    2. Understand fully how fossils are formed.
    3. Collect twelve fossils. Name, mount and describe them, stating where they were found and in what kind of rock they are in.
    4. Know which rocks are likely to contain fossils, and how these are distributed in Canada.
    5. Understand the conditions prevailing at the time of deposition.
    6. Produce evidence of some experience and effort over a period of time agreed to by your company.
  4. Riding
    You must have worked in a stable and ridden a horse or pony regularly, or have owned, looked after and ridden it regularly during an agreed upon time period.
    You must show when riding that you have sufficient control, and have attained basic knowledge of caring for horses.
    You must be able to sit independently of the reins, and be able to maintain the correct seat and position of the hands. You must know about the correct aids in elementary movements (i.e. turns on the move, circles, increase and decrease of pace), and also be able to jump low fences.
    You should also:
    1. Know the essential grooming kit and its uses.
    2. Be capable of saddling, bridling and rugging up a horse.
    3. Have an elementary understanding of the care and cleaning of saddlery.
    4. Have an elementary understanding of horse feeding, watering, and cleaning.
    5. Have a knowledge of the care and working of a horse or pony off grass.
    6. Recognize a loose or worn shoe, an excessively long foot, and a risen clench, and know what action to take.
    7. Know the points of a horse.
  5. Survival
    1. Have a current St. John Ambulance First Aid Standard level certificate, or equivalent.
    2. While camping, demonstrate your ability to be comfortable in all seasons with the following minimum tools or equipment: matches, one pot, a knife, no canned foods, sleeping bag, plastic sheet (or other material not larger than 275 x 365cm), one extra pair of socks and felt liners for winter, wire, string, rope, needle and thread.
    3. While camping, demonstrate good judgement, resourcefulness, understanding, and ability to rely on and protect nature.
    4. Demonstrate your ability to spend at least one weekend in a winter camp with no sleeping bag or blanket. Caution! This, and the following item requires specialized knowledge and advice.
    5. Demonstrate an ability to live off the land for a three-day period.
    6. Take part in at least one presentation on survival-type camping. It must last up to one hour and be to a group other than your own. OR Act as a resource person to another company or advisor, troop or Troop Scouter, to their satisfaction and that of your own advisor.
    7. Show interest by subscriptions to magazines, or by purchasing or borrowing books on the subject.
