Welcome to wiki.scouts.ca - the official'ish Wiki for Scouters! If you need a map to editing the wiki, please feel free to ask!

Again, welcome -- Awallwork 23:07, 24 February 2011 (EST)

Page Merge

Good idea, no sense having multiple pages. With that being said, I'm not sure if the term "hiking trails" adequately describes the page's purpose. Perhaps call it "activity location suggestions" with a redirect on hiking trails to the page. -- Awallwork 23:40, 21 May 2011 (EDT)

(Better to comment late than never... settled on Destinations, with a section for each province. --SteveMatheson 09:38, 20 September 2011 (EDT))

Thank You

Eh Steve; I noticed you have done a TON of work on here and I just wanted to take a moment to thank you (Thank You). I really appreciate everything you have done thus far and anything in the future you may contribute. I like the fact you are well versed in Scouting and this is truly reflected in the ability you have to add relevant content. So again, thank you! --Brandon 09:40, 23 July 2011 (EDT)

Ello; just yesterday I came on here for the first time in a few days and noticed a big change to the main page. I just wanted to say I really like the addition of buttons! Again, thank you! --Brandon 07:56, 20 September 2011 (EDT)

Thanks for noticing Brandon. Thanks for your work too. As for the buttons, it is a good way to have external links and save space. They may be a big large (32px), so I may get new ones (about 24px). I'm not happy with the talkScouts button, maybe I'll steal the one from the old scouts.ca web site. These ones will do for now. My main motivation was because we wanted more internal topic links on that banner. Too many people hit the main page and then don't know what to do from there. Rather than having the nav banner a jump point to external sites, it needs to be better help find things within the wiki. --SteveMatheson 09:23, 20 September 2011 (EDT)

New 24x24 buttons... modified the talkScouts using the talk bubble used on the old main web site. Looks much better (IMO). Takes less space and is less distracting (I think). Hope you like it! --SteveMatheson 08:28, 11 October 2011 (EDT)

I saw the change today when I came on to find something. I agree with your decision to change them. Having them smaller gives you that extra row and the new talkScouts button looks much more appropriate. Good job Steve - thanks again! --Brandon 07:22, 12 October 2011 (EDT)

Hi Steve, great effort. I tried to use email user to reach you and it was rejected by gmail for trying to send as a gmail user. If you didn't get the email, could you please contact me. Thanks. --David Gamey - Mang @ 433rd Toronto 12:40, 12 October 2011 (EDT)

Thank you for all of the work you are doing to make the wiki accessible and clear! Members of the NYN are :doing the pages slowly. I appreciate the changes you made on the Activity Leader page!--User:gennessews 18:20 12 December 2011

You're welcome! I hope that Activity Leaders will find the site useful and contribute their own content for others. --SteveMatheson 15:24, 14 December 2011 (EST)

Nice job on the Trail Skills page! I'm going to try and update Camping Skills to look the same! --Brandon (talk) 18:13, 2 October 2015 (EDT)

Here are a few random ideas for you to consider? --Brandon 21:52, 29 October 2011 (EDT)

    • Perhaps if I understood that better. I like the idea of forms to add articles. A form for recipes, games, etc. would be very helpful. Worth consideration.
    • Efforts are currently in place to prevent spambots from gaining accounts in the first place. Once someone does this, it would be my preference that they can edit with as much ease as possible
  • http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Facebook
    • I'd rather not, as (1) it is good to control who can contribute to Scouts Canada Wiki to control spam, and (2) we would like to leave it open to include the possible user authentication merge with MyScouts (although the will to make that happen is currently low).
      • It has been a couple years since this; it doesn't look they they are maintaining this particular plugin but I still think you should reconsider it. (1) I doubt we'll receive much spam but you never know for sure unless you try? (2) Many folks aren't apt to creating new accounts and this might lead to new folks contributing. Somehow I don't see authentication via myScouts which is really unfortunate.
      • I agree that most don't want to (or can't figure out or be bothered to) make new accounts, but most users are view only users. The potential for spam is so high (automated) that I'm not willing to risk opening up. My dream is still to integrate with myScouts, but leave open for viewing by all. Someday, someday.... --SteveMatheson (talk) 08:57, 6 April 2015 (EDT)
    • Kinda neat
      • Would still be nice to have! Would be create for creating quick snapshots of different parts of SC. --Brandon (talk) 18:11, 26 March 2015 (EDT)

New Content Ideas

  • New program.. new articles needed! Canadian Path, including the main elements, really need supporting articles!
  • Import all pages from the PBO, and have a similar search function to use it. What a content boom that would be!
