Note: This new award replaces the World Conservation Award.

Purpose: To demonstrate a Scouts's concern for, and active stewardship of, the environment.

The World Scout Environment Award badge shows Antarctica - the only collectively managed continent in the world and one of the most at risk from climate change - at its centre. The other landforms create a “world” image - not showing any one particular continent or country, as Scouts are encouraged to look beyond their own borders and think of the world. The colours of blue, green and white are commonly associated with nature and the purple of World Scouting is blended with these. The Sun--which brings life to our world--is reflected in the water.

The World Scout Environment Award is an international award, which means that Scouts in other countries are also working to earn it, even though they may be working on slightly different requirements. All Scouts around the world will wear the badge on the uniform to demonstrate Scouting’s concern for, and active stewardship of, the environment.

To earn the The World Scout Environment Award (which you wear on the back of the sash 3 cm from the top seam) you must complete the following requirements.

Scout Requirements

  1. Complete the Climate Change Challenge Badge and Emergency Preparedness Challenge Badge.
  2. Earn two of the following badges: Fish and Wildlife Challenge Badge; Soil and Water Management Challenge Badge; Forestry Challenge Badge.
  3. Explore/research and creatively explain to your patrol how your community is addressing issues associated with: a) clean air, b) clean water, and c) natural habitats.
  4. Identify a local environmental issue and research potential solutions.
  5. Do each of the following:
    • a) Plan and execute an environmental project (at least 8 hours). This project may be one of those undertaken in requirement 2, provided that it involves the troop in at least 8 hours of outdoor activity.
    • b) On completion, discuss your project with a knowledgeable person. This should include a discussion of the local to global connection of the project.
    • c) Discuss your project with a Beaver Scout Lodge or Cub Scout Six. Describe how you will act differently as a result of the work you have done for this award.

Program Suggestions

Water Exploring

  • Aim : Scouts are working towards a world where people and natural systems have clean water and clean air.
  • Educational objectives:
    • Explore the sources of clean water and clean air in the local environment.
    • Identify threats to clean water and clean air in the local and global environment and be able to suggest solutions.

Nature Art

  • Aim : Scouts are working towards a world where sufficient natural habitat exists to support native species.
  • Educational objectives:
    • Explore a local natural area.
    • Understand the ecosystem connections of native species of plants and animals and their habitat needs.
    • Be aware of global conservation issues affecting biodiversity.

Food Chains and Chemicals

  • Aim : The risk of harmful substances to people and the environment are minimised.
  • Educational Objectives:
    • Be aware of harmful substances in the local environment and identify their source.
    • Demonstrate what personal action can be taken to reduce the risk of harmful substances to people and the broader environment.

Garbage Bag Challenge

  • Aim : Scouts are working towards a world where the most suitable environmental practices are used.
  • Educational objectives:
    • Recognise how we are connected with the environment and how we can make informed choices about our actions that can minimise the impact on the environment.
    • Identify potentially better environmental practices for your local area.

Demonstrate how local solutions can impact global issues.

Prepare for Disaster!

  • Aim : Scouts are working towards a world where people are prepared to respond to environmental hazards and natural disasters.
  • Educational objectives:
    • Be able to recognise different types of environmental hazards and natural disasters and explain why they occur.
    • Demonstrate how to help other people to be prepared to respond to environmental hazards and natural disasters in the local area.
